Senior Researcher at NIAS Current Research Conflicts of Indonesia; This project applies the so-called Conflict Transformation Approach in the production of understanding of conflict in Indonesia. It also aims at policy recommendations related to the transformation of conflict structures in various parts of Indonesia. In relation to the policy recommendations this project offered intellectual support to the European Council (Fall 2004) and Finnish EU presidency (Fall 1999) in issues relating to EU•s joint foreign and security policies. It has also provided the Danish Foreign Ministry (Danida Training Center) and Defense Forces (Defense Academy) with training and expertise. The latest publications in this project are a book in Finnish, Saarivaltio veitsen terällä; Analyysi Indonesian ja Itä-Timorin konflikteista (An Analysis of Indonesian and East Timorese Conflicts, Tampere Peace Research Institute, Tampere, 2001) and an article on media´s role in the conflicts in West Kalimantan in Borneo Review (2/2005) and another on Papua together with Mr. Ruben Thorning in Asian Survey (vol XLII, No. 4, July/August 2002), and on North Sumatra with Mr. Budi Agustono in Indonesian Quarterly (Vol 32, No. 2, 2004). The project belongs to the activity of the Indonesian Conflict Studies Network. NIAS research theme: Violence, security needs and regional cooperation in Asia. Sponsored by: NIAS - Nordic Institute of Asian Studies Conflicts and Development Cooperation This project is focusing on the social science findings on the impact on conflict potential of economic structures, development, and social transformations. The intention of the project is to produce deeper understanding on how development and economic structures could be directed in order to avoid violence and wars. Especially the question of what external international interventions in the form of aid, loans, trade and investment (or their denial, embargo) could do to reduce violence and war potential. This project is the core project of the so-called Conflict Transformation Group. The latest publications in the project are a guideline paper for Finnish development cooperation (written together with Olli Ruohomäki of the Finnish Foreign Ministry) Peaceful Solutions: Navigating Conflict Prevention and Mitigation (Finnish Foreign Ministry, 2000), an edited book Development Cooperation as an Instrument in the Prevention of Terrorism for the Danish Foreign Ministry (Danida, Copenhagen, 2003) an edited book Islam, West and Violence Against Civilians for the Finnish Foreign Ministry (Elements for Discussion Series, 2005), and an article "Can Development and Democratization Address the Root Causes of Terrorism in Southeast Asia?" to be published by Pacific Review.
