Climate Summit in Copenhagen: China moves to centre stage of the climate negotiations

Ahead of the summit, international attention has increasingly focused on the US and China as the key players of the conference. In this week's blog, Jørgen Delman, Professor of China Studies at Copenhagen University, analyses the background to the Chinese position and the options available for the Chinese negotiators. Professor Delman argues that by sorting out its ambitions, priorities and specific implementation measures with regard to mitigation of climate change at the national level, China has placed itself in an advantageous negotiation position vis-à-vis the other major players, especially the US.
