Separate surnames: the breakdown of families vs. the emancipation of women

Map of houses and families in Tōhokumachi, Kyoto. The family of each house is identified by way of the full name of one individual. Almost every name here is male and the map can be seen as a reflection of the still prevailing notion that upon marriage the male spouse's surname should be chosen as the common conjugal family name. (Photo by the author.) Whether or not to allow separate conjugal surnames has been debated in Japan for decades. During their time in opposition the Democratic Party of Japan (DJP) has submitted a separate surname bill every year since 1998. In September last year DJP came into power. In this week's blog Karl Jakob Krogness, Ph.D., Ritsumeikan University, explains how such a bill would arguably reform the family model that has ruled Japanese social life for over a century.
