Chinese Women’s Magazines in the late Qing and early Republican period

The WoMag database contains records about (almost) all articles, images, and advertisements of four important women’s magazines, namely _ Nüzi shijie_ (Women’s World, 1904-07), Funü shibao (The Women’s Eastern Times, 1911-17), Funü zazhi (The Ladies’ Journal, 1915-31), and Linglong (Elegance, 1931-37).

All magazines can be browsed chronologically, by year/volume, month, and issue down to the page level. All items can be searched in English or Chinese and we have been annotating records with (some) notes and categorized them with keywords. Persons, keywords, publication specific genres and columns can also be browsed and filtered to get access to the material based on its content.
Please note: individual registration needed. The project team at Heidelberg university will provide access to a set of metadata and the pages for reading online. However, since there are still research projects going on, researchers are asked to register with us to get all available metadata and a larger view of the individual pages.

As a basic information about how the database can be used and what can be found in it there are short screencasts which are accessible in The Database chapter of the “About the Project” section.
