How has the great power rivalry between China and the US affected small states like Denmark and Norway?
The great power rivalry between the US and China has become fundamental in international politics, which is of crucial importance for small states such as Denmark and Norway. This applies not least to their own bilateral relations with China.
Denmark has already increasingly had to deal with political, economic, technological and security policy conflicts between Beijing and Washington. 5G and critical digital infrastructure, Chinese investments in Greenland, and various value policy clashes are examples of this. We have also witnessed a dramatic shift in sentiment, where China has gone from being Denmark’s strategic partner to being perceived as a systemic rival in just a few years.
Based on the book “Danish Perspectives on China”, Senior Researcher at DIIS, Andreas Bøje Forsby, provides an overview of Denmark’s changing relationship with China, and compares this with Norway’s changing relationship with China.
NUPI’s Bjørnar Sverdrup-Thygeson will chair the event and will also comment on Forsby’s presentation. The seminar will take place at NUPI, and will be streamed on our YouTube channel. If you wish to participate digitally, you do not need to register.
