Book Launch: From Accelerated Accumulation to Socialist Market Economy in China
September 12, 2017 - 15:30-17:00
This study, written by Kjeld Erik Brødsgaard and Koen Rutten, shows how and why Chinese leaders and economic policy planners, since the 1950’s have pursued a policy of accelerated accumulation, leading to current overproduction in key heavy-industrial sectors. There have been heated debates among Chinese scholars and economic planners and attempts to create a more balanced development path, but adherents of high investment rates and a focus on heavy industry have often prevailed. The Government now tries to move forward by introducing a policy of so-called “supply-side reform”. The book also examines issues related to China’s economic development such as enterprise reform, material incentives and conflicting elite visions of China’s development path.
