Call for Papers | China: a European Perspective

October 15, 2017

Place: Sun Yat-sen University, Zhuhai, PRC.

Provisional Dates: 7-9 December 2017

Theme: This will be the first international conference of the recently established Centre for European
Studies at Sun Yat-sen University, the function of which is to mirror the perception of China within the
European sphere. For our first international conference we would welcome papers on the general topic
of the image of China in Europe, especially within the contemporary context involving media and
popular culture but without neglecting academia and the political and economic arenas. One strand of
investigation would therefore be the eventual deconstruction of the demonization of China as
established throughout most of the Western world. Of course, it would be judicious, when holding a
conference today on China and its rising international impact, to highlight the reception of the One Belt,
One Road Initiative which is gathering significant momentum. Papers should be 20 to 25 minutes in
length; in English, with questions to follow.

Objectives: To further a better comprehension of contemporary China and its role as a major player on
the world stage by bringing together scholars from all over the globe, but in particular from Europe and
China, who share our research pursuits as well as our quest for a more global understanding of
contemporary issues. The endeavor involves establishing a network of scholars who will contribute to an
internationally renowned journal which will soon be set up in Europe by Sun Yat-sen University,
dedicated to Sino-European trans-cultural encounters. It is also our intention to establish an annual
conference which will alternate between Europe and China.
