China and Japan head to head in the East China Sea

January 21, 2014 - 09:30

The Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) has the pleasure of inviting you to the seminar:

“ China and Japan head to head in the East China Sea ”

Senior Fellow Euan Graham from  the Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) in Singapore will in this seminar elaborate on regional challenges in the East China Sea. While the South China Sea continues to generate headlines as one of East Asia’s primary maritime flashpoints, rising tensions over the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands since 2011 have propelled the East China Sea to become the region’s most worrisome theatre for strategic rivalry. This is felt mainly between Japan and China, but also implicates the Unites States, Taiwan and South Korea. This presentation explores the maritime dimension to Sino-Japanese relations as it plays out in the East China Sea, with reference to contending ‘liberal’, ‘realist’ and ‘identity politics’ descriptors.
