Chinese investors in Europe and Denmark – Strong ambitions but inexperienced

April 25, 2013 - 00:45-19:00

Copenhagen Business Confucius Institute invites to a lecture by Wilson Zhu, Senior Director in HSH Debt Advisory and Senior Vice President, Head of Business Development Greater China in HSH Nordbank.

Abstract:
Europe is viewed by Chinese investors as the safe destination for investment with advanced technologies, skilled labour and transparent legal environment. In 2012, Chinese direct investment into the 27 EU countries totalled EUR 7.8 billion. So far the majority of Chinese investments have been relatively small in size but the larger M&A deals are becoming more common. The increasing numbers of Chinese investors are looking to acquire technologies, expertise and brands.

Denmark is one of the best countries for doing business. The number of Chinese investments into Denmark has been increasing rapidly with now total 80 Chinese companies in Denmark. Chinese investors are looking to the M&A deals in high-tech agricultural, design, cleantech and life science. Despite of the strong ambitions to invest in Europe and Denmark, Chinese investors have learned that they need more than money to buy the well-known brands and innovative technologies. Chinese investors are very inexperienced about how to access a good M&A transaction, how to make them accepted, how to recruit local employee and how to manage a local operation.

The question is what we can do better, as the counterparties and the potential partners to Chinese investors, to gain deeper knowledge and experience in Chinese mentality, Chinese Strategy and Chinese way of doing business?
