Democracies Today: Constitutions, Cultures, Practices

April 10, 2013 - 00:00-April 14, 2013 - 00:00

The workshop assembles researchers who explore questions about what it takes to run a society in a democratic way. The underlying idea is that there is more to a democratic society than just a democratic constitution. To bring a democracy to life, it also takes citizens with a democratically oriented and informed mind and a democratic practice exercised by both citizens and democratic institutions. The workshop is open to the public.

Workshop Program (very preliminary, January 2013 – t.b.f.c.)

This workshop will be anticipated by an event in the afternoon of Wednesday April 10 on the same topic. This event will address a larger audience (short talks followed by a round table discussion and finally by a general discussion). We are inviting democratic activists to participate and to inform us about their work, heroes of our time who fight for democracy in their respective home countries under difficult circumstances. With them we plan to discuss questions including the following: What can undermine existing democracies? How should countries like Norway relate to non-democratic countries and pseudo-democracies? What would support their work?
