Election and Challenges in the time of Great Game East

December 13, 2018 - 12:30-15:00

Ahead of Bangladesh’s next national election (to be held in December 2018), this workshop brings together a panel of Bangladeshi experts to examine the country’s progress and challenges.

Once known as a basket case the country has made remarkable socio-economic progress in recent times. In terms of social progress, Bangladesh is ahead of its neighbor India, a fact well recognized by Jean Dreze and Amartya Sen. It is hailed as a model for reducing hunger. Besides, the country is listed among the top five fastest growing economies of the world. In short, Bangladesh is a country full of potential. However, Bangladesh is facing a set of challenges including: bitter and bloody rivalry between two major political parties, Islamist militancy, uneven economic growth, democratic deficiencies including suppression of freedom of expression and liberty, and large influx of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar against the backdrop of rising geopolitical competition between India and China in South Asia.

Maren Aase, Centre for Development and the Environment, University of Oslo
Masudur Rahman,  Faculty of Social Science, Nord University
Eirik G. Jansen, Development Specialist
