Guest lecture: “Biocultural Expeditions: Genetics, Reproductive Histories, and Social Transformations in Mustang Nepal” in Oslo
September 16, 2013 - 15:15-16:30
by Prof. Sienna Craig, Department of Anthropology, Dartmouth College
This presentation focuses on the bio‐political and bio‐cultural processes of pregnancy and birth, and the
meanings of these events for multiple generations of women from Mustang, Nepal. The paper draws on
material from in‐depth interviews, including birth stories and reproductive histories, conducted over the
past five years among women born and raised in Mustang, as well as through long‐term participantobservation in the region and with people from Mustang in other locales. Some of my interlocutors live in Mustang for all or part of the year, while others have migrated from this Himalayan district on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau and the margins of the Nepali nation‐state to urban Nepal as well as to the United States.
Location: Lecture Room 3, 3rd floor Georg Sverdrup’s house, Oslo
