India’s National Security – Challenges & Policies

December 3, 2013 - 15:00-16:30

The Institute for Security and Development Policy, Asia Program

invites to an ASIA FORUM with

H.E. Ambassador Banashri Bose Harrison, Ambassador of the Republic of India to Sweden and Latvia

In recent years, Indian policy makers have moved from a compartmentalized to a holistic view of national security. For a country the size of India, with a population of over 1.2 billion people, while the security of the country’s borders remains most important, other dimensions of security such as energy security, food security, technology security, and social cohesion have all become equally vital. Further, while India’s steady integration into the global economy has helped it to grow, this has also enhanced its vulnerability.  This presentation will attempt to give an overview of the main challenges that India faces in the complex task of ensuring its national security and the domestic and foreign policies it has adopted for achieving this goal.

H.E. Ambassador Banashri Bose Harrison is Ambassador of the Republic of India to Sweden and Latvia since August 2012. Her most recent assignment in the Foreign Ministry was as Head of the Central Europe Division including the Nordic region. She served in France – dealing with India’s interactions with UNESCO. From January 2003 to October 2006, she was Deputy High Commissioner of India to South Africa. From January 2007 to May 2010 she was the head of the Commercial Wing of the Indian Embassy in United States.

Ambassador Banashri Bose Harrison has a postgraduate degree in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics and an M. Phil degree in Defense and Strategic Studies at the National Defense College of India.
