Lecture: Korea: Buddhism and State in the Medieval Period

September 26, 2013 - 16:15-18:00

Open guest lecture by Prof. Yannick Bruneton, University Paris Diderot

Abstract:

My focus in this presentation will be on relationship between Korean Buddhism and mediaeval states. This relationship is often referred to in historiography as “Confucianization”. It can mean: 1) the process of incorporation of monks, sects and rituals into state apparatus, modelled on China from Tang to Ming; 2) the discourses of historians dealing with relationship between Buddhism, state and society; 3) the attitude and reactions adopted by Buddhist masters towards Confucianism.

Organizer: The Oslo Buddhist Studies Forum, Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages
