Master’s Degree Programme in Asian Studies, Turku

The deadline for applications to the Master’s Degree Programme in Asian Studies at the Centre for East Asian Studies, University of Turku, Finland, is fast approaching! All application documents must arrive at the University Admissions Finland service in Helsinki by 28 February 2014.
The Centre for East Asian Studies, University of Turku, Finlandoffers a two-year Master’s Degree Programme in Asian Studies. This programme is available to qualified students, both Finnish and international, interested in deepening their knowledge of contemporary East Asia. Our Master’s programme offers systematic training in East Asian Studies regardless of your previous disciplinary background.
As part of the programme, you will add area expertise on contemporary East Asian societies, history and politics to your disciplinary education. These subjects are designed to help you enter relevant professions, whether in the public or private sphere, in a globalized world where East Asia is rapidly gaining significance as one of its most dynamic regions.
You will also be well equipped to pursue an academic career in Asian studies, as the programme prepares students for doctoral studies – for example at the Centre for East Asian Studies itself.

The programme has an intake of 15 students per year. You will be enrolled at the University of Turku where, during the final stage of your two-year 120-credit study programme, you will write a Master’s thesis at the Centre for East Asian Studies and, if successful, graduate as Master of Social Sciences (Asian Studies) in the university’s Faculty of Social Sciences. One Finnish credit is equivalent to 1 ECTS.
A student applying to enter the programme must have the following qualifications. These qualifications must be adequately documented. For details, please see our website.
1. A Bachelor’s degree of at least 3 years’ duration from an institution that also provides doctoral degrees
2. Relevant academic background, preferably a minor or equivalent in East Asian studies
3. Previous studies or skills in an East Asian language (mainly Chinese, Japanese and Korean)
4. Proficiency in the English language
The application period to the Master’s Degree Programme in Asian Studies began on 2 December 2013. The deadline for this round of applications will be 28 February 2014. Completed and signed paper applications with all attachments (including recommendations) must arrive at the University Admissions service by the deadline.
