Oslo Buddhist Studies Forum Lecture: Entanglements of gender, religion and politics, and the contested identities of Sri Lankan Buddhist nuns

March 17, 2015 - 16:15-18:00

By Hanne Krystad, M.A. Anthropology (University of Copenhagen)

The entanglements of religion and politics continue to influence civil society in post-war Sri Lanka. The political agency of Buddhist monks is demonstrated and scrutinized from various theoretical vantage points, particularly when members of the clergy express and perform explicit support towards Sinhala nationalist discourses. Sri Lankan Theravadin nuns are hardly recognized in academic studies or media coverage of the processes of nationalist ideology. Are the nuns detached from the spheres of mundane political and social discourses?
