It was established in 1980 by the late Khenpo Jikme Phuntsok of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism, and has been an influential force in the reestablishment of Buddhism in the region in recent decades. As one of the most vibrant centers of traditional Buddhist learning in today’s China, Larung Gar and the Serthar Academy of the Five Sciences is an important force in bringing Buddhism into the 21st century.
