SASA/SASNET Fika without borders Bangladesh seminar
November 20, 2014 - 17:00-19:00
The South Asian Student Association (SASA) organises its eighth informal Fika Without Borders South Asia event in collaboration with SASNET on Thursday 20 November.
At the Fika time we seek to deconstruct the image of Bangladesh in western media of the country of nothing but natural disasters and collapsing garment factories. We do this by looking at several aspects of Bangladeshi society that are usually overlooked by Western media coverage on the country such as democracy, mass movements, digital media and the rich music traditions in the country. Our main speaker Sanchari De is a PhD student at the Department of Communication and Media at Lund and a recipient of the prestigious CSDS-ICSSR fellowship for her project. She will talk about a Bangaldeshi protest/mass movement, Shahbagh, and the role of digital media and political mobilization in this movement.
In addition, we have a live Baul recitation by S.M. Shakiel from Bangladesh who studied biotechnology at Lund University.
Finally, one of the SASA Boardmembers from Bangladesh, Rubana Mussharat, will provide a reflection on the countries present situation based on her experiences in the courntry as well as her expectations for the nearby future.
As usual we will serve coffee, tea and Bangladeshi snacks.
Venue: Basement floor at Lund University External Relations (ER) building, Stora Algatan 4, Lund.
