Seminar: The new middle class in China: Gender and generation

August 22, 2014 - 09:15-12:00

In this seminar Chinese and Norwegian researchers will take a look at the changing notions of femininity and masculinity in the Chinese middle class family and among young people and discuss what kind of tensions and  potentials they may imply.

China is the world’s fastest growing economy. Huge and rapid processes of modernization are taking place, producing a new, well educated and relatively wealthy middle class of professionals.  This creates changes, not only in patterns of consumption and in the organisation of daily life, but also in relation to gender and generation. To what degree do Western models of modernity connected to individulization, self-reflexivity and increased gender- and generational equality fit the case of China? To what degree may the experiences from Chinese modernization challenge Western ideas of what modernization is all about? In this seminar Chinese and Norwegian researchers will take a look at the changing notions of femininity and masculinity in the Chinese middle class family and among young people and discuss what kind of tensions and  potentials they may imply.
