The Merging of Indo-Tibetan Philosophical Disciplines with the English Language and Western Styles of Pedagogy

September 4, 2012 - 16:15-18:00

Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, Founder and president of the Nitartha  Institute for Higher Buddhist Studies

Having begun in the renowned Indian mahāvihāras, Nālandā and Vikramaśīla, and continuing through its expression in scores of monastic colleges in Tibet, the Indo-Tibetan philosophical tradition, with its highly elaborate systems of analytical and dialectical engagement, is now in the early stages of taking root in the West. Yet making the full range of the methods of inquiry and exposition as relevant and efficacious in the English language as in the source languages presents considerable challenges. Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, founder and president of the Nitartha Institute for Higher Buddhist Studies (www.nitarthainstitute.org) will discuss his ongoing efforts and accomplishments, since 1996, in merging the extensive Buddhist philosophical tradition with the pithy and effective teaching methods of the West.

As always the lecture will be followed by wine, snacks and more  informal conversation.

Venue:  Seminarrom, 10 in P.A. Munchs hus, Oslo University

Organizer: Oslo Buddhist Studies Forum
