Uppsala lecture on Myth and imagery of rock and mountains in Early Vedic Texts
November 7, 2012 - 15:15-16:45
The Forum For South Asia Studies at Uppsala University organizes a lecture with Christiane Schaefer on “Myth and literary imagery of rock and mountain in Early Vedic texts”. Christiane Schaefer is currently working as a Senior Lecturer in Comparative Indo-European Linguistics at the Department of Linguistics and Philology, Uppsala University. Her research interests are mainly in the field of Vedic linguistics and literature, Tocharian, and language contact in Central Asia.
Lecture abstract: Mountains and rocks are not only ingredients of some of the most prominent cosmogonic myths in the earliest Vedic text, the R̥gveda, they are also integral parts of the R̥gveda’s literary imagery. The poetic language of the hymns reflects conflicting notions: on the one hand mountains are described as spaces of protection, nurture and stability, on the other hand they are depicted as unsteady, undependable and treacherous.
Venue: Sal 2-0023, Engelska Parken, Uppsala University.
