I am a Master’s student in Anthropology from the University of Copenhagen.
I am currently writing my Master’s thesis with the tentative title ‘Staying pleasurably, staying well – staying Kachin’. In this thesis I explore popular notions of how well-being and the good life is conceptualized among young Kachin from the northernmost state of Myanmar, Kachin State. I argue that dominant conceptions of well-being among these youth revolve around collectivist notions of Kachin ethno-nationalism. Thus, the principles of the Kachin nationalist movement and the somewhat utopian idea of an autonomous Kachin nation led by Kachin people influence both how people perceive and pursue a better future. I write the thesis based on three months of ethnographic fieldwork in the end of 2016 in Myitkyina, Kachin State, Myanmar.
Michael will be at NIAS until August.
