The Fridtjof Nansen Institute (FNI) is an independent institution engaged in research on international environmental, energy and resource management politics. Projects at the Institute focus upon observing and analysing international negotiation processes, international organisations, the shaping of national positions in key countries, and the implementation of international obligations at the national and local levels. Implications for public and private sectors are also an important concern. The Institute maintains a multi-disciplinary approach, with main emphasis on political science, economics and international law. Within this framework, FNI expertise and research activities are clustered around the following nine focal points: Biological diversity China Climate change Energy Europe Global environmental governance Marine affairs and Law of the Sea Polar regions Russia and the post-Soviet states Most of FNI’s research on Asia focuses on China, where we have special language and regional competence. FNI seeks to analyze China’s environmental and energy problems, attempts to understand how environment-related bureaucracy and decision-making works, and analyses the role China will play in international cooperation on climate change and other environmental and energy issues. FNI researchers have from time to time also been involved in research on other countries and sub-regions in Asia, either as parts of larger, global research projects, or because of their relations with China. For example, in-depth studies have been carried out in the Philippines, with focus on the management of agrobiodiversity.
