    The academic programme of East Asian Studies at the Institute for Asian and African Studies has the responsibility for the research and teaching on the languages and cultures of the entire Far Eastern region in all of its historical and political dimensions. This is the only programme of its kind in Finland, and by the number of active teachers and majoring students it is the largest programme at the Institute. The programme has two professors, three visiting lecturers, one assistant, and several special readers (docents) and part-time teachers. East Asian Studies Kuva The programme The academic programme of East Asian Studies at the Institute for Asian and African Studies has the responsibility for the research and teaching on the languages and cultures of the entire Far Eastern region in all of its historical and political dimensions. History The earlier history of Far Eastern Studies in Finland was mainly connected with the field of Altaic Studies, a tradition which still continues. Since 2005, Altaic Studies functions as a separate M.A. programme at the Institute, while other aspects of the Far Eastern region are covered by the programme of East Asian Studies. At the same time, Japanese Studies, which in 1994-2005 functioned as a separate programme, has now been integrated into the programme of East Asian Studies, which in its current shape covers China, Korea, and Japan.
