Guest lecture 2: Introducing the Indo-Portuguese creoles
This is one of two international guest lectures about creoles by Hugo Cardosa (Lisabon University)
Abstract:
The history of contact between Portuguese and Asian languages is over five centuries-old, and has resulted in the emergence of a string of Asian-Portuguese creoles throughout the~ continent. These were at some point much more numerous and widespread than they currently are, but they survive to this day in a few locations. The region we will focus on is the one with the highest concentration of these languages: South Asia. In this talk, we will introduce the Indo-Portuguese Creoles (a cover term referring to all South Asian varieties) in terms of the history of their formation, their current status and principal linguistic characteristics.
Location: Building 1483-444, Nobelparken, Aarhus University
