Call for Papers: The Chinese Dream(s), Aalborg University
November 13, 2014 - 00:00-November 14, 2014 - 00:00
Ever since President Xi Jinping in 2013 used The Chinese Dream as the new political slogan of the Chinese government, China observers, journalists and the Chinese public have debated the exact meaning of the term, its implications, as well as the motivation for introducing this particular slogan. Compared to previous political slogans such as “The Three Represents” or “Harmonious Society”, the recent Chinese Dream is multi-layered, allows for various interpretations and raises an array of questions: “Whose dream is the Chinese Dream?”, “Is there only one dream or several different dreams?” “Is the Chinese Dream an individual or a collective project?” and “How does the Chinese Dream compare with for instance the American Dream?” It is not only the definition of the slogan that is interesting, but also how quickly the term has caught on with the general public – in marked contrast to earlier political slogans that remained the property of internal Chinese Communist Party (CCP) discussions and official publications.
