The Department of Cultural Studies and Oriental Languages at the University of Oslo invites for applications for a doctoral reserach fellowship focusing on religious festivals in Asia.
The research initiative “Religious festivals in Asia” focuses on dynamics of change in religious festivals in East-, South-, and Southeast-Asia from a comparative perspective. Such religious festivals have been subject to processes of reinvestment, reinvention, and resignification over decades, and often centuries. To analyze that process, we zoom in on the dynamics between patronage “from above” and aspirations “from below.” Applicants are invited to develop a PhD-project within the framework of this initiative on “Religious festivals in Asia”, limited to candidates working on festivals in India, Japan, Tibet, or Vietnam. The project description must be submitted as part of the application.
The person appointed will be affiliated with the Faculty’s organized research training. The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at the Faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD. The successful candidate is expected to join the existing research milieu or network and contribute to its development.
The appointment is for a duration of 3 years. All PhD Candidates who submit their doctoral dissertation for assessment with a written recommendation from their supervisor within 3 years or 3 ½ years after the start of their PhD position, will be offered, respectively, a 12 or 6 month Completion Grant.
