CMS Conference: “China’s military – present and future”

We would like to draw your attention to the CMS Conference: China’s military – present and future on October 2, 2023. The conference is open, but all participants are asked to sign up in advance.

This topical conference will discuss the development of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), analyze its aims towards becoming a world class military power by 2049, and examine the PLA’s international strategic relations. Among the speakers will be the internationally renowned Prof. Taylor Fravel and Prof. You Ji, who will share their insights on PLA, their external strategies, and the perspectives for military-civil relations among other issues. They will be accompanied by lectures by Prof. Camilla N. Sørensen, Brigadier General Ole Kværnø and Prof. Mikkel Vedby Rasmussen, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The conference will be held at Victor Haderup auditorium at Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Blegdamsvej 3B, Copenhagen.

09.00-09.15: Welcome by Prof. emeritus Bertel Heurlin followed by an introduction by Kristian Søby Kristensen, Head of Centre, CMS. 

09.15-10.30: Quo Vadis PLA: “Perspectives for the military-civil relations and the related capabilities” by Professor You Ji, Xián Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Suzhou, followed by short comments by Brigadier General Ole Kværnø and Q&A.

10.30-11.00: Coffee break

11.00-12.30:  Quo Vadis PLA? “Perspectives for the external strategy including the capabilities required” by Professor Taylor Fravel, MIT, followed by short comments by Professor Camilla N. Sørensen, Royal Danish Defence College and followed by Q&A.

12.30-13.30: Lunch

13.30-14:45.  “What kind of warfare to be fought in the mid-twenty-twenties?”, by Professor Mikkel Vedby Rasmussen, Dean, Faculty of Social Science, UCPH, followed by short comments from Prof. emeritus Bertel Heurlin and followed by Q&A.

14:45-15.15: Coffee break.

15.15-16.30: Panel debate, introduced by Professor Camilla N. Sørensen, Royal Danish Defence College (China´s nuclear deterrence policy) with Prof. You Ji, Prof. Taylor Fravel, Prof. Mikkel Vedby Rasmussen and Brigadier Ole Kværnø.

16.30: End of conference and reception.
