The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at Stockholm University invites to a lecture by Prof. Dr. John Chung-En Liu, National Taiwan University, Taiwan. The lecture is part of the Digital lecture series – TAIWAN’s literary and visual cultures.
Abstract:
Taiwan is an island country with varied landscape, diverse cultures, and incredibly rich biodiversity. This talk will broadly introduce the environmental transformation that Taiwan has experienced in the past few decades and the contemporary environmental challenges Taiwan currently deals with. We will cover topics such conservation, recycling, pollution, waste management, and land use conflicts, as well as global climate change. Throughout the talk, we will touch upon how colonial legacy, development states, industrialization, and democratization shape the relations between people and the environment.
