Extraordinary Times: Politics in Contemporary Vietnam
June 5, 2014 - 15:00-17:00
The Forum for Asian Studies cordially invites you to an open lecture by Prof. Jonathan London, Hong Kong City University
Vietnam’s political development has entered an extraordinary, if indeterminate, phase. Politics in Vietnam, long a predictable and dour affair, are today characterized by a sense of uncertainty and possibility that has no precedent in the country’s post-war history. Among the most important developments on Vietnam’s political scene over the last one or two years has been the evolution and (attempts at repression) of an incipient public sphere. While falling far short of the Habermassian ideal, the re-emergence of autonomous and semi-autonomous political speech in Vietnam is remarkable in its own right. An analysis of these developments sheds light on the state politics in one of East Asia’s most populous but least understood countries.
