IKOS PhD Mid-term evaluation: Coerced into Mafia. Crime and Muslim Criminalization in India

We want to invite you to an open evaluation with our PhD-fellow in South Asia studies. To comment on the candidates work, we have invited Associate Professor Kenneth Bo Nielsen, from Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Oslo.

The mid-term evaluation is organized in two parts and starts with a 2-hour public seminar, followed by a closed meeting.

The purpose of the evaluation is to assess the progress of the PhD project at a point when it is still possible to make small or substantial changes. In general, we want to know how the candidate is doing, how much work is done, and what is left.
About the PhD candidate and her research

Chiara Arnavas is a PhD fellow at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages, and in 2022 she has been a visiting scholar in Sociology at Johns Hopkins University. Chiara’s research focuses on the land mafia phenomenon in West Bengal, and the consequences of it for social inequalities of class, caste, religion and gender.

Chiara’s research explores the connections between land mafia structures and longer histories of agrarian relations, inequality and land dispossession in West Bengal. Chiara’s dissertation also addresses the relationships between local dispossessed farmers and a wetland environment in transformation, in the context of land mafia activities and illicit resource extractions for “sustainable eco-urban” projects.
