Lecture on Guwen guanzhi and two representative texts
March 26, 2013 - 12:00-14:00
Venue: Confucius Institute, Unioninkatu 33, 3rd floor (entrance through the courtyard)
Guwen guanzhi, gems of Chinese literary heritage compiled in 1694 by Qing scholars Wu Chucai and Wu Diaohou, has been the most renowned anthology of classical Chinese essays. This lecture will introduce us to this anthology and then focus on two representative texts: Biography of Boyi (Boyi liezhuan) from Sima Qian’s Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji, the first general Chinese history) and Tao Yuanming’s The Peach Blossom Land: prose (Taohuayuan ji). The former eulogizes personal and moral virtue and pacifist idealism, while the latter seeks for peace and harmony with nature by invoking the image of an ethereal utopia, an inapproachable arcadia.
The speaker, Jyrki Kallio, has translated selections from Guwen guanzhi into Finnish in three volumes, published by Gaudeamus (2005, 2007, 2008). He is currently a researcher at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, and has published a series of articles and books on Chinese traditional culture, politics, and foreign policy.
This lecture will be part of one course offered by the Confucius Institute: Classics of Chinese Literature (http://www.helsinki.fi/confucius/studyandresearch/culture/courses%202012-13.htm). Reading materials in Chinese, English, and Finnish are available at the Confucius Institute. The lecture will be in English.
