Lecture: Women in China – Pirates, Iron-Girls and Financial Wizards
April 20, 2017 - 16:00-17:30
Event Navigation

Women in China have been in charge of armies in battle, triumphed in scholarly debates, commanded pirate fleets, smuggled opium and run brothels, operated in secret societies, founded schools and bomb factories, risked their lives in uprisings and revolutions, published magazines, become businesswomen and contributed to the discussion of the new man. Professor Marina Thorborg portrays the larger picture in the history of Chinese women. Emphasis is on the period of great change after China’s second revolution in 1949 and until today. The lecture is Professor Marina Thorborg’s interpretation of the history of women in modern China.
