April 4, 2013 - 19:30

The Social Sciences Students Union (Samhällsvetarkåren) at Lund Universuty invites to a Development Documentary Night, on Thursday 4 April 2013, at 19.30. The film ”Unwanted Pregnancies – Stories from Maldives” will be shown. Venue: Samvetet, Paradisgatan 5 S, Lund.
The small island nation of Maldives in the Indian Ocean is a world famous luxury tourist destination renown worldwide as the “paradise islands”. But little is known to the outside world about the life of the nearly 350,000 people who call these islands home. On February 26, a Maldives court sentenced a 15 year old rape victim to 100 lashes and house arrest on charges of pre-marital sex under the country’s Sharia law. This outrageous sentence, for the first time has put Maldives under global scrutiny for the gross violation of human rights and degrading punishment subjected to local women and girls. An online petition calling on the Maldivian government to end the practice of flogging women and children for the crime of fornication has been signed by more than one million people worldwide. More information.
Hawwa Lubna, BIDS student and journalist from Maldives, will be there to share her own knowledge on the topic: The untold story of violence suffered by women and girls and the systematic failure in providing justice and protection to the victims of abuse and rape. National statistics show, every 1 in 3 woman is a victim of sexual or physical abuse in the Maldives and 90 percent of those flogged in the Maldives for “sexual offences” are women and underage girls.
