Stockholm Seminar: Japan’s Geoeconomic Strategy in the Asia Pacific

October 13, 2020 - 17:00-18:00

Japan’s Geoeconomic Strategy in the Asia Pacific
90th Stockholm Seminar(Webinar) on Japan

w. Professor Saori N. Katada, University of Southern California
When Japan’s domestic economy began to transform at the turn of the century, its economic foreign policy strategies also started to shift away from bilateralism and informal rules toward new approaches of regional institution-building that would assure Japanese leadership. As two major global powers, China and the United States, wrestle over economic advantages, Japan currently occupies a pivotal position capable of tipping the geoeconomic balance in the region.

In her new book, Japan’s New Regional Reality: Geoeconomic Strategy in the Asia- Pacific, Saori N. Katada explains the reasons behind the shift in light of both international and domestic dynamics.

Saori N. Katada is Professor of International Relations at University of Southern California (USC). Before joining USC, she served as a researcher at the World Bank in Washington D.C., and as International Program officer at the UNDP in Mexico City.
