Stockholm seminar on Contemporary Indian Jewish Writing

April 14, 2013 - 17:00

Heinz Werner Wessler, Visiting Professor for Indology at Uppsala University, lectures on ”Contemporary Indian Jewish Writing” at Judiska Museet in Stockholm on Sunday 14 April 2013, 17.00. The seminar is organised by Svensk-indiska föreningen. Venue: Judiska museet, Hälsingegatan 2, Stockholm. Register your participation before 12th April.

In his research, Dr. Wessler focuses on classical Hinduism, on interactions between religion, literature and society and on modern Hindi literature. Judaism has traditionally has been one of many charming mosaic stones in the multireligious landscape of India. Focusing on three authors: Nissim Ezechiel; Esther David; and Sheila Rohekar, Dr. Wessler will try to discover Jewish identity and the intricacies of Jewish “secular” authorship in a community that is on the verge of vanishing in its home country, since the great majority of Indian Jews has emigrated to Israel since the 1950s.
